Founded in 2008, Elm Construction is a local full-service design/build firm that has quickly become a leader in the industry for streamlining projects both big and small from start to finish. In fact, in 2014, the company earned tremendous accolades when it was named Remodeler of the Year by the Home Builders Association of Alabama.
In fact, Pike says most people aren’t aware that they’ll typically get the most bang for their buck by making small simple upgrades. “Adding attic insulation or sealing leaky openings in doors or windows can be very inexpensive,” he says. “Yet addressing these issues with simple solutions can have an immediate and significant impact on your power bill.”
His green building experiences include participating in the 2015 Builder Blitz for Habitat for Humanity. Working alongside a team of subcontractors and suppliers, Pike says his company was able to build a new home that met the requirements for Energy Star 3.0 certification in just one week.
“In order to qualify for the Energy Star 3.0 rating, we had to build the home following strict guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that include a complete thermal enclosure system, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and a complete water management system,” says Pike. They also installed energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and several other green home products.
“It’s one of the most economical upgrades that can have a tremendous impact on a home energy-efficiency, especially attic insulation. In most homes, attic insulation tends to be forgotten and over time, it can become compressed from foot traffic, shifted around depending on miscellaneous home repairs in the surrounding area, or may even have been installed inadequately in the first place.”
In most cases, Pike says adding new attic insulation can be completed in just a few hours time, and the results will typically pay for themselves in a very short amount of time.
