Local Resident Greens Urban Communities One Home at a Time

Local Birmingham resident Phillip Powell is revitalizing homes throughout the city with a green touch.

Powell and his business partner Mark Rebeno, a consultant in the green industry, have developed a commitment to turn low-income rental properties into eco-friendly jewels in urban communities. Upon meeting last year they decided they wanted to change the way people think about green in Birmingham, and they are doing it one property at a time.

Four Corners Sustainability was born out of that desire and the two developed a company with a focus on taking dilapidated homes and nurturing them into “green” sustainable properties.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Powell’s focus is on some of our cities least desirable homes and neighborhoods. His optimistic approach is one he hopes will spur environmental pride and awareness in urban communities.

Armed with a “green team” made up of local business people, Powell is charting the way with the support of city officials including Mayor Larry Langford. Renovations are currently underway for a model home that will serve as an example of future homes to come.

Each property will be directed to Section 8 housing.  Renters will be allowed to move in, clean up their credit, and then become eligible to own their house through special financial programs.

Each home will be equipped with energy efficient appliances and materials, gardens, and even a monthly quota of recycling pounds to meet. There will also be required education and training for each tenant on sustainable and environmentally friendly living.

Funds to green each property are between $20,000 and $25,000.  The impact of renewing our local communities with a focus on the environment is priceless.

My Green Birmingham commends Phillip Powell and Mark Rebeno for their efforts!
